IN THE LAND OF THE BLIND, THE ONE-EYED MAN IS KING
This phrase is credited to Desiderius Erasmus’s Adagia (circa1500 AD)
Latin: in regione caerorum rex est luscus
DESCRIPTION:
A black clay sculpture of a reclining face of a man. He only has one eye and is resting and leaning in as he relaxes on the side of his face. He is filled with happiness, even though he has only one eye. He is certainly not ‘pretty’ as he is asymmetrical and imperfect, but one has to salute him for his attitude of peace, gratitude and innate happiness.
PROCESS:
I had an immense amount of pleasure creating this sculpture. I used a bag of charcoal sculpting clay from Cape Pottery Supplies in Somerset West, and as I was busy slapping it down to get a feel for it and to prepare the clay, this sweet man emerged spontaneously – I simply went with it 😉
